Blessed Francisco Palau, OCD, Our Founder

What was the gift of the Spirit given to this man, gift that brought about the birth of Carmel Missionary?

Francisco Palau was born in Aytona, Lerida (Spain) on the 29th of December 1811, in the bosom of a deeply Christian family. He died in Tarragona on the 20th of March, 1872.

His whole life is marked by a continuous struggle and search for his vocation. The search was long and arduous but the encounter with his beloved, The Church, transformed his whole existence. Father Palau's
spirituality, rooted in Teresian Carmel, is marked by a unique experience of the Mystery of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. This is at the center of his entire life and the moving force behind his apostolic activity. In bearing witness to this mystery, he dedicated all his energy proclaiming to men and women the beauty of the Church and drawing them to love her. A Contemplative and an Apostle, his prayer found expression in a dynamic ecclesial service.

His deep experience of the Mystery of  the Church transformed his spiritual fatherhood and gave definite direction to his mission as founder of the Carmelite Missionaries.

Father Francisco Palau was beatified on April 24, 1988.
